Who Are We?
Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is an association made up of people for whom drugs had become a major problem. We are recovering addicts. We meet regularly to help each other stay abstinent.
NA is not affiliated with any other organization. We have no ties to political or religious movements, law enforcement, and are never under surveillance. Any addict can join NA, regardless of the type or types of drugs used.
How Does It Work?
Narcotics Anonymous offers a recovery process.
One of the keys to NA’s success is the therapeutic value of help from one addict to another.
NA members share both their successes and challenges in overcoming active addiction, living a drug-free and productive life, by applying the principles found in the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of NA, which are at the heart of Narcotics Anonymous’ recovery program.

What is a Narcotics Anonymous meeting?
Meetings are places where you can find help and support from people who have experienced what you are going through right now. Come to the meetings and you will see addicts become abstinent and stay that way.
We hope this will help you believe that you too can become abstinent. Come as often as you want, it’s free. Meetings help find the strength to resist temptation and remain abstinent. Soon, it might be you who inspires others to become abstinent in turn. That’s how it works, we help each other achieve things we cannot do alone.
He does not say, 'I am cured.' We do not take a stance on the use of prescribed medications for the treatment of specific diseases or particular psychiatric conditions. We encourage our members who have questions to consult qualified medical professionals.
How Does a Narcotics Anonymous Meeting Work?
Typically, a meeting begins with the reading of texts summarizing our approach and how NA works. Then, participants are invited to speak freely on a chosen theme and/or share the difficulties they face and the solutions they’ve found in living a drug-free life.
These exchanges are not discussions but rather a series of individual contributions. Everyone can take what is useful to them and leave the rest. For our safety and the safety of those who lend us or rent us meeting spaces, we insist that no participant brings drugs or drug paraphernalia.
Can I Attend a Meeting Without Prior Notice?
Absolutely. Meetings are run by people who were once newcomers too, and you will be warmly welcomed. If you’re late, that’s okay—just come in and listen. Newcomers are encouraged to identify themselves so that others can come greet you.
Is NA a Religious Group?
Absolutely not. NA offers a spiritual program, not a religious one. The word 'God' is mentioned in our literature because it is a practical way of naming a 'higher power' that each individual can freely conceive.
To recover from addiction, we need a 'higher power' greater than ourselves. Many atheist or agnostic members consider the groups or members of NA as their higher power, or the help and support they find in meetings, their sponsor, their NA friends, etc.
Who Is Part of Narcotics Anonymous?
Addiction affects all kinds of people. In NA, we meet individuals from all backgrounds and nationalities, all social classes and professions. Any person struggling with addiction can join us, regardless of their age, background, identity or sexual orientation, beliefs, religion, or lack of religion.
Anonymity allows NA members to identify and help each other overcome their shared problem, rather than focusing on differences. The 61,800 weekly NA meetings in 129 countries (as of 2012) testify to the universality of our method.
Literature
The 12 Steps of NA
———————————————————–
1. We admitted we were powerless over our addiction, that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
Just for Today
———————-
Just for today,
my thoughts will focus on my recovery.
Just for today,
I will have faith in someone from NA who believes in me and wants to help me recover.
Just for today,
I will have a program, and I will try my best to follow it.
Just for today,
Thanks to NA, I will try to see my life in a better light.
Just for today,
I will be fearless, focusing my thoughts on my new friends—people who no longer use drugs and who have found a new way of life. As long as I follow this path, I have nothing to fear.
Recovery is real
- When, at last, we realize our inability to function as human beings, with or without drugs, we are all confronted with the same dilemma.
- What is left for us to do? It seems that there is only one alternative: to continue as best we can until the sad outcome (prison, hospital, or morgue) or find another way to live.
- In the past, very few addicts were able to choose this last option. Today, they have a better chance. For the first time in human history, a simple method has proven effective in the lives of many addicts.
- It is available to everyone. It is a simple spiritual program, not a religious one, called Narcotics Anonymous.
